The New Insurance Agent Role

JUST 20 YEARS AGO, Americans across the country welcomed the insurance agent into their home for an evening appointment. After a short visit with the new prospect about their insurance and financial needs, the agent sometimes was able to sell a new policy. This technique is something of the past. Now, two decades later, a reduction in insurance agencies and programs has caused the decline of over 70,000+ agents according to the U.S. Census of Life Insurance Sales Personnel and LIMRA. Fewer agents means fewer are educating the public about the need for financial service products.
ACCORDING TO LIMRA MANY US FAMILIES ARE NOT PREPARED FOR AN UNTIMELY DEATH.•Fifteen percent of husbands and 28 percent of wives have no life insurance.
•6 million households (ten percent of families with children under 18) have no life insurance or term life insurance protection.
ACCORDING TO LIMRA MANY FAMILIES ARE UNDERINSURED
•Insured husbands in the U.S. carry enough life insurance to replace their income for only 4.2 years, and wives for of 7 to 10 years, the typical married couple would need to double its current coverage.
•The percentage of married parents that believe their current life insurance protection is inadequate is 56 percent.
THE CONSUMER IS NOW in a quandary; where does he turn to meet his needs? Agents are turning to the workplace to aid the employees in financial planning or closing the gap between health coverage and out of pocket expense. Voluntary supplementary benefits are one of the answers – Life insurance, cancer policies, accident coverage, disability plans, etc. Since they are voluntary, the employer can offer such benefits at little or no additional cost to their benefit package . All help with gap coverage or financial planning and are portable if purchased as an individual vs a group policy. Since 20% of the workforce change jobs each year, according the Bureau of Labor statistics, this should be a key issue to a consumer.
